Some time after these things, God put Abraham to the test. He said to him, “Abraham,” and he answered, “Here I am.”
According to one opinion in the Talmud, the “things” refer to a conversation between Ishmael and Yitzchak.
Ishmael said to Yitzchak: “I am greater than you in the fulfillment of mitzvot. You were circumcised at the age of eight days old, without your knowledge and without your consent. I, on the other hand, was circumcised at the age of thirteen years old, with both my knowledge and my consent."
Yitzchak said to Ishmael: “You think you’re greater than me because you were willing to circumcise one organ? If Hashem, were to say to me: “Sacrifice yourself before Me”, I would sacrifice my entire self.”
Immediately, Hashem tested Avraham to confirm that Yitzchak was sincere in his offer to give his life. (Sanhedrin 89b)
