What is the significance behind the use of the martzeah?
His master shall take him before God. He shall be brought to the door or the doorpost, and his master shall pierce his ear with an awl; and he shall then remain his slave for life.
A Martze’a is to be used to pierce the servant’s ear.
A martze'a has a numerical value of 400. The same 400 years of intended slavery for the Jews in Egypt.
Because Hashem said to the Jews when delivering them from the Egyptians. that they would be from now on, His servants, and no one else’s.
