Rabbi Eytan Yehudah Dzikowski
How many and what kind of animals did Yaakov send, and why?
After spending the night there, he selected from what was at hand these presents for his brother Esau:
Yaakov sent 550 animals as gifts to Esav, alluding to the fact that the Royal line of Edom (Esav) would begin 550 years before that of Israel.
Yaakov also sent Esav a valuable peregrine falcon to help him hunt. He also placed precious stones and jewels in the hands of his servants.
Yaakov sent Esav male camels. The Torah doesn’t explicitly state this, because the camel is very modest when it mates.
Before assembling the gifts, Yaakov stayed up all night hoping for a prophecy which never came.
This teaches us that one should always make reasonable preparations and never rely on miracles.
