Now when Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them by way of the land of the Phillistines, although it was nearer; for God said, “The people may have a change of heart when they see war, and return to Egypt.”
God did not take the Jewish people along the route of the Philistines when they left Egypt, even though it was shorter.
This is because He did not want them to see the dead of the tribe Ephraim who were killed when they escaped from Egypt, against God’s will, three years before the Exodus.
He was worried that they would be scared of the journey and want to return to Egypt.
It is the dead of Ephraim that are the “dry bones”, referred to in the prophecy of Ezekiel that were resurrected in the valley of Dura.
