Was Moshe’s son the right heir supposed to succeed him?
יִפְקֹ֣ד יְהוָ֔ה אֱלֹהֵ֥י הָרוּחֹ֖ת לְכָל־בָּשָׂ֑ר אִ֖ישׁ עַל־הָעֵדָֽה׃
“Let the LORD, Source of the breath of all flesh, appoint someone over the community”.
Originally Moshe suggested to Hashem that his own sons should inherit his position.
Moshe did so, despite the fact that Eldad and Medad already revealed that Yehoshua would be the one to succeed him.
Gershon, Moshe’s oldest son, having heard the prophecy, ran to tell Moshe in front of Yehoshua.
(Rashi, Bamidbar 11:28; Bamidbar 11:27; Rashi, Sanhedrin 17a; Sifri)
