From Beerot-bene-yaakan the Israelites marched to Moserah. Aharon died there and was buried there; and his son Elazar became priest in his stead.
When the people of Amalek heard that Aharon died and the Clouds of Glory departed, they decided to attack the Jews.
Many Jews were frightened and turned back towards Egypt.
A group of Levi’im chased after them and slew eight such families, while the rest returned to the camp. Four families of Levi’im were also killed in that skirmish.
The Levi’im wondered why some of their people deserved to be killed, and determined that it was because they did not properly mourn Aharon. They then decreed that the nation mourn Aharon, and that Elazar, his son, become the new Kohen Gadol.
