So God led the people roundabout, by way of the wilderness at the Sea of Reeds. Now the Israelites went up armed out of the land of Egypt.
From the word “chamesh/five”. Every family left with five children. (Some say six.)
We are told that only one out of five adult Jews left Egypt, while the rest were killed during the plague of darkness. The surviving children were adopted by those who survived, with each family adopting at least four children. Hence, the people left “armed” with good deeds.
There are a number of interpretations of the word “armed”: “armed” with good deeds or “armed” with their tefillin.
